Exploring Gascony — Things to Do from Gîte Pouget

The area around Gîte Pouget is one of the most unspoilt corners of southern France. No crowds, no traffic — just medieval bastide villages, endless vineyards, unhurried markets and food that tastes better here than anywhere else.

Villages & Towns

A Region Full of Character Just 2 km away, Montréal du Gers is one of the oldest bastide towns in Gascony. Stroll under the arcaded central square, stop for a coffee in the shade and feel how the pace of life shifts here. Nearby: Fourcès (France’s only round bastide village), the tiny fortified hamlet of Larressingle, and the charming village of Mézin. For a bit more life: Condom and Eauze are both worth a visit for their markets, museums and terraces. Auch, the Gers departmental capital, is a half-day trip for its cathedral and famous D’Artagnan statue. And for a full day out: both Bordeaux and Toulouse are within driving distance.

Food & Wine

Cycling & Walking

The Gers is the gastronomic heart of south-west France. This is where Armagnac (France’s oldest brandy) is made, where the country’s finest foie gras comes from, and where the light, fresh whites of the Côtes de Gascogne are grown. The weekly markets in Eauze and Condom overflow with local produce — duck, melon, cheese, fruit — straight from the grower.

Nearby wine estates for tasting and buying: Domaine Pellehaut, Domaine Magnaut, Domaine de la Haille, Domaine Maubert and Domaine Péto — all just a short drive away.

Our restaurant recommendations:

  • L’Escale & Mont Resto — Montréal du Gers
  • L’Auberge — Fourcès
  • L’Auberge de Larressingle — Larressingle
  • Les Contes d’Albret — towards Nérac

With its gently rolling hills and quiet country roads, the area around Gîte Pouget is perfect for cycling and walking. You’ll ride through vineyards, sunflower fields and tiny villages that barely appear on maps. All cycling routes can be found on Catena Cycling. Bike rental: available — standard and electric — in Montréal at Gascogne Bike Hire.

Water & Cooling Off

On the hottest days, there are several options nearby:

  • Gondrin — leisure park with swimming
  • Lac de l’Uby, Cazaubon — lake with beach and water activities
  • Thermes de Castéra-Verduzán — thermal spa in the Gers
  • Casteljaloux — thermal pool, about an hour away

Nature & Stargazing

The Gers is one of the least light-polluted départements in France — on a clear night, the sky is extraordinary. By day, spot wild birds, walk through the vineyards or simply settle into the garden with a book. Sometimes that’s the best thing a holiday can offer.
